"Of Paper And Light" 

Installation of paper cut-out sculptures 

with original music to accompany the works.

With these new works, Seattle artist Jesse Brown's shapes and patterns are 

added by taking away. Rather than adding marks to the paper, the cutouts form the image and their absence allows for the interaction with light, 

the works combine drawing of graphic material with three dimensional structure.

Artist Bio:

Jesse Brown is a multidisciplinary visual artist based in Seattle, Wa.

His work has been exhibited with galleries in Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, Chicago, New York, Tokyo, Berlin, London and Paris.

Jesse's work is often an exploration in geometric forms, pattern, shape and repetition which display a very clean, graphic quality. He is know for working in a wide variety of mediums including drawing, painting, sculpture, public art, installation, 

artist books, video and animation.

I taught a handmade typography workshop with a group of students there who selected the quotes and helped paint the mural, they ended up making some really rad type drawings and paintings, maybe i'll post some of them later.

This is a project I've been slowly working on for some time now.
The idea came after Derek and I watched a documentary borrowed from the Seattle Public Library, it was this amazing Buckminster Fuller video that was in the most hideous vhs box with out any of the original packaging. It seemed to me that a good film should also have good packaging and this would hopefully influence more people to watch the film. I'm specifically interested in the VHS boxes as they are sort of a dying format. So the I started searching through local library branches to find films that had the same kind of potential as the Fuller documentary, I would check them out, research the film and then design new packaging which would then replace the old. The tapes are returned back into circulation.
More of these are in the works, but here are a few images of some recent films I worked on.

Let There Be Geo is an art exhibition at Columbia College Chicago’s Leviton A+D Gallery that surveys the art of contemporary artists who use geometric form in their work. While employing geometric form in art is not a new phenomenon, geo forms are appearing in some of the most aesthetically progressive work being made today. Twenty-first century responses to geometric form make use of a variety of styles and media, from painting and video to photography and sculpture. The works in Let There Be Geo examine today’s incarnation of geometric form.
"The persistence of artistic geometric forms hints at a continuum, or a legacy, or some coy deity made present in this world by his shadow, cast as a polygon, on the eyeball of the artist," writes Jason Foumberg in the exhibition's essay."

Life Long Work Week is a project to promote the idea of artist collaboration in a public setting. We plan on taking over retail storefronts, galleries, fairs, and anywhere else people gather.

Experiment #001:
From September 7th through the 13th in Chicago, IL artist/designers Jesse Brown and Chad Kouri will transform the Renegade Handmade storefront into their work space for one week. During this time the two of them will be creating new collaborative work which will be available at the Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago on September 12th & 13th
Both Artists will be working in the space from 11-7pm each day.

I was asked to be a contributor for the book Papercraft by German publisher Die Gestalten. They make some really incredible books so I was honored to be one of the artists selected for it.
The book will be out in Europe/UK this month and should hit the states by October.

Neon Mural

Here are some photos of the neon mural I was commissioned
to do this spring by Sound Transit for the LightRail train station in Seattle.
It's a combination of paint and light boxes filled with neon tubes,
there are sensors that trigger the neon to come on once it's dark enough outside.

If you want to see it in person it's at the corner of Lander and Busway,
or by taking the train by the Sodo Station.

Jesse Brown is a multidisciplinary visual artist based in Seattle, Wa.
His work has been exhibited at galleries in Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, Chicago, New York, Tokyo, Berlin, London and Paris.

Jesse’s work is often an exploration in geometric forms, pattern, shape and repetition which display a very clean, graphic quality. He is known for working in a variety of mediums including drawing, painting, paper sculpture, limited-edition artist books, installation, video and textile works.

In addition to creating work to be shown within the gallery setting, Jesse has also been involved in creating murals and public installations in Seattle, for nearly ten years he worked as the Artistic Director at the Seattle based non-profit Urban Artworks, an organization that creates murals throughout the city with at-risk youth.

Jesse is currently designing a permanent public art installation for one of the Sound Transit LightRail stations in the SODO neighborhood, scheduled to be completed in June 2009.

Aaron Harris is a Seattle based artist, working primarily in painting, drawing, printing and film. His work has been shown in Seattle, Chicago and New York.

Artist Statement: These paintings, unless otherwise noted, take place in or near West Seattle. Scandinavia and Japan are also involved. Some are based on true things that have happened, and for those, I’ve included descriptions in the titles.

You should imagine Whale “sounds” when possible while viewing these paintings.

Some thinking ideas while viewing the paintings are: the internet, stucco walls, salt water, wood saunas, how many people there are in this crazy world, how you feel about what happened to you in your day so far, or what’s happening to you right now, how long or short things have been around, and what they where before they are what they are now, and if you’re around people, you can think about them.

1st Avenue Mural

Some photos of the a mural i designed with Artworks last year that's finally installed, the design was sort of a collaboration with elementary school students who provided the poems that make up the mural. I took these and created the stylized/typographic versions seen in the mural. It was a rad project to work on, thanks to the kids and volunteers who helped paint it.
It's on 1st ave and King street in Seattle, sort of on the edge of Pioneer Square and the Sodo neighborhood.

I'm back in the world of internets, here are a few updates.

-I've been selected by A.T.C. Gallery in Chicago as their Muralist in Residence for 2008.
These means I'll be painting a huge mural in the entryway and up the staircase for the next month or so.

-I have work in two group shows coming up soon, one in Portland and the other in London.
both will be radical, details soon.

New Mural

I went to Auburn (south of Seattle) last week to see a the completed version of a
mural I designed titled "Mountains and Rivers without End"

I made the design from Chicago and sent it out,
all the painting was all done by other artists and volunteers.
It measures about 100 x 13 feet
The title is inspired by the poet Gary Snyder.

I've been making new work for my solo show coming up
in August at Wonderful Union in Seattle.
Other than that I'm doing some design work, still doing mural related things
with Artworks, arguing with the post office and eating watermelon.

So, I moved from Seattle to Chicago last week.
I've been working on designing some large murals in Seattle that will be painted
through the summer, doing some design things, drawing/writing a new zine that will come out
in August, making new work for a group show in Portland next month and
a solo show in Seattle - which i will be coming back for.
Here are some new things.
- a mural at Cairo Gallery in Seattle.
- t-shirts i designed for "The Village Green" -my show at 20twenty
- a new poster for Foscil / Blvd. Gallery

+ also, my zine "The Sound of High Heels" is available at Cairo which just opened in Seattle, plus 2 new original drawings there.

Hello!
I've been working on some new drawings and non-permission public installations,

is very strange, i'm spending some time in palm springs and los angeles.
updates when i get back to seattle, a lot of new ideas for the new year.
Here is something french composer/pianist Erik Satie wrote that i came across, pretty funny.

An artist must regulate his life.

Here is a time-table of my daily acts. I rise at 7.18; am inspired from 10.23 to 11.47. I lunch at 12.11 and leave the table at 12.14. A healthy ride on horse-back round my domain follows from 1.19 pm to 2.53 pm. Another bout of inspiration from 3.12 to 4.7 pm. From 5 to 6.47 pm various occupations (fencing, reflection, immobility, visits, contemplation, dexterity, natation, etc.)

Dinner is served at 7.16 and finished at 7.20 pm. From 8.9 to 9.59 pm symphonic readings (out loud). I go to bed regularly at 10.37 pm. Once a week (on Tuesdays) I awake with a start at 3.14 am.

My only nourishment consists of food that is white: eggs, sugar, shredded bones, the fat of dead animals, veal, salt, coco-nuts, chicken cooked in white water, mouldy fruit, rice, turnips, sausages in camphor, pastry, cheese (white varieties), cotton salad, and certain kinds of fish (without their skin). I boil my wine and drink it cold mixed with the juice of the Fuschia. I have a good appetite but never talk when eating for fear of strangling myself.

I breathe carefully (a little at a time) and dance very rarely. When walking I hold my ribs and look steadily behind me.

My expression is very serious; when I laugh it is unintentional, and I always apologise very politely.

I sleep with only one eye closed, very profoundly. My bed is round with a hole in it for my head to go through. Every hour a servant takes my temperature and gives me another.

here are some installation photos from the opening this weekend, i think this is the hardest i've ever worked in my life. as soon as i came back from doing the show in chicago i statred working on this project non-stop, ended up working 14-15 hour days leading up to the opening. in the end everything turned out rad, thank you james, lauren and weston so much for helping me with the final touches..i would have been a mess without you guys.
The show will be up until the end of the month, please go have a look if you are in seattle.
trying to take a little break for the rest of the month, although i don't really know how to do that.

The trip was amazing, the show went really well..of course i didn't take any photos at the opening, i always forget to do that. I met a bunch of rad people, ate really gnarly food, saw some good artwork.
drank old style, checked out a million hand painted signs there..I wish i had photos of them.
I made a zine for the show which i'll be posting soon, it will be available on my papervspencil.com site and there are also copies at Penelopes. thanks stephen,jessica,jenny you guys are the raddest.
Now that I'm back i'm going to be working non-stop on the project I'm doing at OKOK gallery next month.
